The payload failed to enter the designated orbit due to a malfunction of the rocket, Xinhua reported.
"The rocket experienced malfunction during the flight following its launch from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center at 5:28 p.m. Beijing Time [0928 UTC] in northwest Gansu Province.
"The specific cause of the failure is being analyzed."
No further details were given.
Chinese bloggers reportedly said that "Apparently the second stage engine either failed to ignite or shut down too early, and the range safety system blew the rocket up," i.e. was destroyed on purpose for safety reasons.
